The next sessions will take place on February 11 and 25 at 6:00 PM. They are primarily aimed at organizations in the sector but are open to the general public. This initiative is part of the Commit To Rights – Compromís amb els Drets project, in which the Girona City Council is involved.
First Participatory Session
This week, Girona launched the participatory process to define future discrimination support services in the city. Yesterday, the Centre Cívic Ter hosted the first of three plenary sessions planned within the project. This process is part of the European initiative Commit To Rights, led by the Girona City Council through the Social Cohesion and Services Council.
According to Amy Sabaly i Balde, Councillor for Equality, Social Justice, and Cooperation, "Girona's growth has led to increasingly diverse and complex discrimination cases. Understanding these and working together with citizens and stakeholders will help us address them effectively, with the ultimate goal of eradicating them."
Núria Riquelme i Zurita, Councillor for Catalan Language and Citizen Services, added: "Girona is deeply committed to guaranteeing people's rights. Initiatives like this help us shape public policies in this direction. Regarding linguistic rights, we want to be promoters, and Commit To Rights - Compromís amb els Drets complements our ongoing efforts."
Upcoming Sessions and Objectives
In the first session, participants discussed the concept of discrimination and its presence in society. The next sessions will address how to respond to discrimination (February 11) and the discrimination support system in Girona (February 25). Around 170 people from various groups and organizations are expected to attend each session. Registration is open to everyone via the website.
The goal is to establish action protocols to address discrimination, promoting participatory governance and developing public policies with the collaboration of affected individuals.
A Comprehensive Participatory Process
Prior to these sessions, multiple meetings were held with organizations in the sector, including 8 institutional presentations and 13 meetings with related entities. The discussions covered health, housing, employment, leisure, linguistic rights, gender identity, sexual orientation, aporophobia, racism, religion, and age discrimination. A specific meeting on linguistic rights was held in January.
The Commit To Rights - Compromís amb els Drets project aims to create inclusive and participatory public policies to prevent and combat discrimination from an intersectional perspective.
